Sleepy Bear's Book Club - Day 18

Hi Book Buddies,

It's been a while since we have blogged. I miss hearing from all of you. I know it's a busy time of year.

Well, by now you should have finished reading The Tiger Rising. I hope you write to me to tell me what you liked the most about the story and what you didn't like. I will wait to tell you mine, just in case you have not finished the book.

I want to choose a new book for the new year. So, start thinking of what you would like to read next. Then we can take a vote. I am so excited!

Bye for now,

Sleepy Bear Plays In the Snow

Hi Friends,

Did you get out in the snow? I'm glad you like our snowman. I was going to use a carrot but the snowman was too small for the carrots Kathleen had. So, we used a small binder clip for the nose, some red beads for his mouth, and teeny tiny pieces of chocolate for his eyes. Then, we used a small piece of one of Kathleen's fleecey scarfs for his neck to keep him warm. Oh, and we used twigs for his arms. I wanted a hat for him just like mine, but we didn't have one.

Hot cocoa is very yummy! I like mine with lots of whippy cream on top. Some people like tiny marshmallows. I think those are yucky.

I think I am a good cook. Kathleen liked the pie Moosey-Moose and I baked. Oh, and I made brownies with my friends in San Diego. Remember Scaredy Pup and Bear? That reminds me, I need to call them. But this time I will talk for a short time and not 3 hours! I don't want another big phone bill and then I have to wash lots of dishes again. That was not fun.

Natalie, you are very nice to help those people who got stuck in the snow. Have fun playing in the snow but be safe, too.

Happy Holidays,

Sleepy Bear

ps - Be sure to check back tomorrow for your last reading assignment for my book club. We will choose a new book soon.

Sleepy Bear Plays In the Snow

Hi Friends,

I looooove the snow! This morning Moosey-Moose and I built a snowman! That was hard work. The snow is very cold in my paws. I had to take lots of time-outs to warm up. Moosey-Moose kept teasing me. What do you think of the snowman? I think we did a great job - it looks great!

Then we made snow angels. Have you ever done that? Be sure to wear a warm jacket when you make one because the snow is really cold and wet.

Well, I'm going to make some hot cocoa to help me warm up. Then I want to go play in the snow again. I hope you have fun in the snow today, too. Remember to wear a warm jacket, a hat, ear muffs, mittens, and boots.

Sleepy Bear's Book Club - Day 17

Hi Book Club Buddies,

I hope you are staying warm. I think I need to get a warm sweater like Moosey-Moose is wearing.

Yesterday I felt like reading a holiday book. So I chose to read one of Kathleen's favorite books. She said she read it when she was a little girl. It is called, Mr. Willowby's Christmas Tree by Robert Barry. It's about a tree that is too tall so Mr. Willowby chops off the top. Then the top goes on a journey to different houses. But each time, the tree is too tall. I won't tell you the ending except that it's a happy ending.

Well, stay warm today.

Sleepy Bear's Book Club - Day 16

Hi Book Buddies,

I hope you have kept up with the reading. I have a few questions for you.

1. Why is Rob very sad in Chapter 15?

2. Sistine is named after something. Do you remember what the story said? Here's a hint, the answer is on page 57.

In chapter 17 I felt sad for Rob when he was remembering about how his dad told him not to cry over the bird. What about you? Did you feel the same way?

Well, we are getting closer to the end of our book. Let's read chapters 18, 19 and 20 this weekend.

Bye for now.

Sleepy Bear's Book Club - Day 15

Hi Book Club Buddies,

Someone was wondering why Sistine's dress was torn and muddied. If you re-read chapter 6 you will find the answer. If you can't find it, then let me know and I will help you some more.

So, we are almost finished with our first book club book! Let's read chapters 15, 16, and 17 this week.

Do you have predictions about what will happen? Moosey-Moose told me that he thinks the tiger will escape from the cage. I'm not sure I agree. I think the zoo might come and get the tiger and give him a good home. I'm still thinking about it.

Natalie, I will give Mrs. Hunter your message about your homework. I'm sure if you do your best work, she will understand if it is late.

Have a good day at school tomorrow.

Sleepy Bear's Book Club - Day 14

Hi Boys and Girls!

Wow! We're almost finished with our book. I'm really liking it. I thought that was pretty funny, too, when Sistine tried to get Rob's rash. That was pretty silly!

No, I have not read the whole book, yet. But, maybe we can finish it this week. What do you think? What book should we read next? I'm really happy I have this book club and I'm really glad I have friends to read books with. I don't know how many people are in the book club. Some people are reading the book but they don't write to me. I wish everyone wrote to me. But, sometimes people get really busy.

Anyway, let's read chapters 15 and 16 tomorrow.

Oh, someone said my birthday is this month. I think they mean Kathleen's birthday. Her birthday is two days after Christmas! She's lucky!

Did you see Moosey-Moose's pictures of him and the reindeer? They look really cool! He got a new sweater, too!

Well, I'm going to go to sleep now. I want to make sure I get lots of sleep so I don't get sick. Lots of people are catching winter colds. OK, I'll write to you tomorrow.

Sleepy Bear's Book Club - Day 13

Hi Book Buddies!

How are you? I'm doing OK. I have the sniffles a little bit.

I have a question for you. Do you remember why the hotel where Rob lives is called the Kentucky Star? The answer is in chapter 11.

Let's read Chapters 13 and 14. Tell me what you like the most about this story so far. My favorite part is about Rob and Sistine. I'm really curious about why Rob has the rash on his legs. I'm also curious about Sistine. We don't know too much about her, yet. I like how the author keeps us in suspense and makes us want to keep reading.

Be sure to write back.

Sleepy Bear's Book Club - Day 12

Hi Book Buddies!

I hope you had a great holiday. I sure did. the pie Moosey-Moose and I made was delicious. And, I don't have to wash dishes anymore!

Well, I hope you had time to read Chapters 9 and 10. I am worried about Rob and why he carries sadness around with him. That was in Chapter 10. What do you think? Let me know what is your favorite part or your least favorite part of the story so far.

OK, for Monday and Tuesday, let's read Chapters 11 and 12.

Bye for now.

Sleepy Bear Gets Mail!

Hi Boys and Girls,

Yesterday was one of my happiest days! I was reading my book when the mail man came. He had a letter for me! It was from my friends Big Bear and Scaredy Pup! They live in San Diego except they were in Florida visiting family. The letter is all the way from Florida. Can you find that state on the map? I asked Kathleen to help me. It's far far away! I took a picture of the letter so you can read it, too.

OK, well, back to my book. I'll write more later.

Bye,

Sleepy Bear

Sleepy Bear and Moosey-Moose Bake a Pie

Hi Friends,

Yesterday I baked a pie. Well, I had some help from Kathleen. And Moosey-Moose helped, too. I told him I would cut a slice for both of us because he might cut the slices too big and then there wouldn't be enough for everyone else.

I hope you have a Happy Thanksgiving!!!

Sleepy Bear Washes Dishes

Hi Boys and Girls,

I have been washing dishes to earn more allowance money so I can help pay for my phone bill. I never knew washing dishes would be this hard to do. It's not fun.

But I have not washed dishes all weekend. I did read The Tiger Rising today, too. We should read Chapters 9 and 10. I hope that is not too much work for you. Kathleen told me most kids are not in school this week.

Well, write soon.

Sleepy Bear's Phone Bill!

Hi Friends,

Boy oh boy! You will never guess what happened to me. I got some bad news in the mail. Remember when I called my friends, Scaredy Pup and Bear in San Diego? And remember I said we talked on the phone for 3 hours. Well, Kathleen got the phone bill today. She was not very happy. She has to pay $248.36. That's a lot of money. I feel really bad now for costing her lots of money. Kathleen says I was not very responsible for talking so many hours on the phone at one time. I told her I miss my friends. She said we need to take turns calling each other and we need to write letters to each other, too. She said I can do extra chores around the house to help pay for the phone bill. I don't want to but maybe it is the right thing to do. What do you think?
I'm never going to talk that long on the phone again.

I'd better go wash the dishes now.

Bye,

Sleepy Bear's Book Club - Day 11

Hi Book Buddies,

Did you read Chapter 7? Why doesn't Sistine like the town where she and Rob live? I am very curious about her. I wonder where she is from. I also wonder if Rob will tell her about the tiger in the cage. Do you think Rob is imagining it?

Well, let's read Chapter 8.

Oh, before I forget, be sure to read next week, too, even if you are not at school. I will still write in my blog.

Thanks for being in my book club.

Bye for now,

Sleepy Bear's Book Club - Day 10

Hi Book Buddies!

I agree with Natalie. I think Rob is being nice to Sistine because he wants to be friends with her. I think maybe he thinks he can help her some how or he trusts her. I wonder if he will tell Sistine about the tiger in the cage?

Let's read Chapter 7.

Kathleen has been to the Sistine Chapel in Italy. She says it is very beautiful. I've only seen pictures of it.

That's all for now,

Sleepy Bear

Sleepy Bear's Book Club - Day 9

Good Morning Book Club Buddies,

Did you read Chapter 6? I wonder why Rob helped Sistine if he thinks she does not like him? He is a really nice person. I am very curious about Sistine. I want to know more about her.

Did you look up the Sistine Chapel? What is it?

Did you look up the Liberty Bell in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania?

Read Chapter 7 today. I'm looking forward to reading your comments this afternoon.

Sleepy Bear Eats Too Many Brownies

Hi Boys and Girls!

Boy oh boy! I'm feeling really sleepy this morning. Maybe I should not have eaten 5 brownies yesterday. But they were really delicious. I did find my friends' recipe but it still came out different. I think Scaredy Pup added some ingredients when no one else was looking! I will have to ask him. I will call him today.

I have to go now.

Sleepy Bear Bakes Brownies - Yipppeee

Hi my friends,

I finally made brownies! And, my friend Moosey-Moose helped me. I was so happy to have his company in the kitchen. This is a picture of us mixing the ingredients in Kathleen's big fancy red mixer! It is really cool!

I'll write back later after I take the brownies out of the oven.

Sleepy Bear's Book Club - Day 8

Hi Book Club Buddies,

Who used Google to find out more about the Sistine Chapel? Isn't it a beautiful place? Kathleen has been there with her husband. They have pictures, too.

We should all be reading Chapter 6 now. Do you think you can read Chapter 7, too? If you can, go ahead. I will write again this afternoon with some questions.

Later today I plan to make brownies. Wish me luck!

Sleepy Bear's Book Club - Day 7

Hi Boys and Girls,

The Tiger Rising is really getting exciting! You should have read Chapter 5 by now. If you have not read Chapter 5 yet, then be sure to read it on Thursday. OK?

I don't know why Rob has that rash. I'm wondering about that, too. I hope it is not serious. I wonder if he is going to get into trouble because he left his house when he was not supposed to.

Thanks for writing your nice comments and questions.

Sleepy Bear Has Blog Advice

Hi Boys and Girls,

How are you this morning? Are you happy to have the day off? Do you remember why today is a holiday for schools and some businesses? Write back and tell me if you don't remember and I will tell you why we celebrate Veterans' Day.

But, before you comment again, I want to remind you about safety. When you use the computer it is very important to follow these three rules:

1. Never tell your last name to anyone.
2. Never tell your phone number to anyone.
3. Never tell your address to anyone.

Moosey-Moose is going to remind kids about these 3 rules, too. We both want you to use the computer safely. If you have questions, you can ask me or you can ask an adult who lives with you.

Sleepy Bear's Book Club - Day 6

Hi Book Buddies!

I'm really liking this book. My favorite part so far is when Rob goes to the principal's office and he thinks he's in trouble but he's not! That surprised him.

I feel sorry for Rob, too, because something is bothering his legs. I wonder what it is.

Have you finished your assignments from my blog day 5? I hope so.

Tomorrow we will read chapter 5. Be sure to ask questions!

By for now,

Sleepy Bear's Book Club - Day 5

Hi Boys and Girls,

I hope you got a chance to read this weekend. I know I did. But if you didn't, that's OK. Make sure you read tomorrow so you don't get behind. Are you taking your book with you wherever you go?

Here is you assignment. In Chapter 3 Rob meets Sistine. She's the new girl at school. Go to google and look up the Sistine Chapel. It is a very famous church in Italy. I think you will like it.

Do you like the new girl? Why or why not?

In Chapter 4 Rob talks about Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. That is a very famous city. Try to find it on a map.

Do you know what the Liberty Bell is? If you don't go to Google and find a picture.

Did Sistine really put her foot in her mouth? Re-read chapter 4 to find out.

Be sure to write comments to me if you have any questions. Let me know how you like the story, too. I'm really liking it!

I will give you a new assignment tomorrow.

Sleepy Bear's Book Club - Day 4

Hi Boys and Girls,

Sorry I have not written in a few days. I got sick with the flu. I was so sick I didn't even feel like reading.

Let's read chapters 3 and 4. On Sunday I will write again and ask you some questions about the chapters. If you have questions, be sure to write a comment to me so we can talk about it.

I really do like this story. I wonder what Rob is going to do about the Tiger. Is the tiger real, I wonder? What do you think?

Happy reading!

I'm going to read some more.

Sleepy Bear's Book Club - Day 2 Night

Hi Boys and Girls!

I am so excited you are in my book club! I really like the story. Moosey-Moose joined, too. We might have to help him. He does not read very much. That's OK. I don't mind helping him.

I agree with Natalie. The new girl is not nice to make fun of Rob's rash. What if she had the same problem? She would not like it if Rob teased her. I remember one time I had fleas. That was not fun. Some kids made fun of me. But, Kathleen got me some special soap and helped me get rid of them. She told me to ignore the mean kids. That's what I did.

Eric is already reading chapter 2. Who is else is reading chapter 2?

Zeena, it is a good thing for kids our age to drink hot chocolate but not the coffee. Besides, making a mocha is too messy. I will never do that again. Yes, I will make brownies. I'm reading the recipe and checking if I have all the ingredients. There are a lot! I need to remember to add chocolate chips. Yum!

I hope it does not rain tonight. Last night was scary. Moosey-Moose was really scared!

I am going to re-read chapter 2. Write soon.

Your book buddy,

Sleepy Bear

Sleepy Bear's Book Club - Day 2

Hi Boys and Girls,

Did you read chapter 1?

Do you know where the story takes place? At first I thought it was Kentucky. But then I re-read and found out that it takes place in a town called Lister. Do you know where that is?

It sounds like Rob and his dad are living in a motel. I feel sad for Rob because his mother died. I bet that is really hard for Rob. I wonder if he misses her?

Have you ever tried to not think about something like Rob does? I tried to not think about how much I miss my friends, Bear and Scaredy Pup. I was not very good at not thinking about them.

That reminds me, I need to make brownies!

Let's read chapter 2 today. I can't wait to hear from you and how you like the story so far. Do you have questions, too?

Sleepy Bear's Book Club

Good morning again!

I finally cleaned up my mocha mess. I will never try that again.

Are you ready to start our book club? I am! And I am very excited. Our first book together is The Tiger Rising by Kate DiCamillo. Let's read the first chapter today.

Remember your strategies.

1. Re-read if you don't understand.

2. Ask yourself questions about what you read.

Have fun!

Sleepy Bear Makes a Mocha

Good morning Friends,

I was up late last night planning for our book club. I started to get very sleepy but I had lots of work to do.

I know Kathleen likes to have a coffee drink while she works and reads. Sometimes she makes a mocha. I thought I would make one, too. She always looks so cozy when she reads and sips her hot drink.

I've watched her make one a million times. It's really easy. All she does it put chocolate syrup in the cup and some coffee and some milk and some whippy cream.

But then things went crazy. Everything happened so fast! The coffee was dripping out of the machine, the milk was foaming out of the tin cup, the syrup dripped everywhere and the whippy cream was spraying all over the kitchen counter! And not much got into my cup. That was the worst part.

What a mess. No mochas for me.

I have to go now.

Sleepy Bear Bakes Brownies

Hi Boys and Girls,

Yesterday I talked on the phone with my friends Bear and Scaredy Pup. First we talked for 1 hour. Then we talked for a second hour!

Then we talked for a third hour! We had a lot to talk about. I asked Bear about the recipe. He told me where to find it. I will look for it tomorrow.

I asked what they were doing. He said they were enjoying the sunshine.

Finally, we said good-bye. But we promised we would talk on the phone again.

I sure miss my friends. I felt sad hanging up the phone. But at the same time, I felt happy because Bear and Scaredy Pup made me laugh and they cheered me up.

Before I look for the recipe for brownies again, I am going to get my book for the book club. I have to decide how many pages we will read each day. I am very excited to get started!

I will chat with you again soon.

Your book club buddy,

Sleepy Bear Bakes Brownies

Hi Boys and Girls,

I finally climbed up all the stairs and found the telephone.

But I could not reach it.

So, I decided to move a chair and climb on the seat.

But, I still could not reach the phone. So, I climbed up higher!

At last! I reached the phone. I made myself cozy and dialed the number to my friends, Bear and Scaredy Pup.

I was so happy to hear their voices. We chatted for 1 hour!!

Sleepy Bear Bakes Brownies

Hi Boys and Girls,

I still do not have a recipe for baking brownies. That is a good idea to use a post-it note to mark my favorite recipes. I will remember to do that next time. Maybe I will add chocolate chips, too. I love chocolate chips! Yummy!!
But for now, I will call my friends in San Diego. The phone is upstairs. They will be surprised to hear from me.
I will let you know what they tell me.

I sure miss my friends. Maybe I will take a nap then I will decide.

ps - Natalie, my friends visited me earlier this month in October.
Hi Boys and Girls,

I'm still missing my friends, Bear and Scaredy Pup. They are my friends in San Diego, California. Do you know where that is? Well, they visited me for one whole entire week!!

One of the things we did was bake brownies. They were yummy. Maybe I should make some today. I will go look for the recipe.

Wish me luck.

I hear you will all be getting books for our book club. I am sooo sooo excited. Are you telling all your friends, too?

I hope you had a good day at school. Did you learn a lot?

Today I checked on my flower bulbs. There is a teeny tiny sprout growing. I have my paws crossed that they grow really big.

I'm hungry. I need to go eat a snack. What should I have? Maybe some nuts and fruit?

Sleepy Bear Is Checking In

Hi Boys and Girls,

Thank you for your comments. I had a fabulous day! I got to read and sleep and watch my bulbs grow. I also sat in the sunshine. It was so beautiful.

I really appreciate your encouragement for my garden. Imer, I have planted bulbs for flowers. They are supposed to have 3 little twigs growing out of the middle of the flower. The twigs I will use when I cook. I sure hope they grow like they are supposed to.

Yes, Alondra, this is my house. Well, really it is the porch in the backyard. Next time I will show you pictures of my herbs I grew during the summer.

I am glad most of you will join my book club. Giselle and Natalie, tell your school librarian I said "thank you" for getting extra copies of The Tiger Rising. I think we will have a lot of fun.

It is waaaay past my sleepy time so I must go now.

Sleepy Bear Tries to Grow Plants

Hi Boys and Girls,

A few weeks ago my friends from San Diego came to visit me. We planted some bulbs to grow flowers. Do you know what bulbs are? If you don't, that's OK. I can tell you. They are like really big seeds that you plant in the dirt. Well, we planted them but I'm a little worried that we did something wrong because they are not growing yet. I even used my brightest flashlight to help me find the flowers. I'll keep checking. And, I'll keep my paws crossed and hope they grow.
I like to work in the garden. How about you? Do you like to plant seeds in the dirt and watch them grow?

I'll write to you again soon. Wish me luck with my bulbs!

Sleepy Bear's Book Club -

Hi Boys and Girls,

Thank you sooo much for your blog comments. I really like getting messages from you. I will try to answer everyone's questions.

Nope, no girlfriend for me. I'm waaaaay too young for that. Maybe when I'm 50 years old. Of course, I would love to be friends with each of you. You all sound like very nice kids and you like to read! Zeena, thank you for your encouragement about me starting a book club. I am very excited about it, too. I got the idea from grown ups I know who are in book clubs. It looks like fun so I thought I would try it out.

Trying to decide on a book to read for the book club has been really, really, really, hard for me. There are sooo many great books to read, and not enough time. But, I need to start somewhere. How about we start with a short book for our first one? Would you like that? I think I would like to read The Tiger Rising by Kate DiCamillo. Can you each get a copy of the book so we can talk about it on my blog? I think that would be really cool and lots of fun. I can't wait to get started! Let me know.

Well, I need to go now. I'm feeling a little sleepy. Write back soon.

Sleepy Bear's Book Club - I Can't Decide!

Hi boys and girls,

Thanks a bunch for your comments. I really like your suggestions for my book club. You know, I have never had a book club before. It's totally new for me. I still can't decide on which book to choose. So far kids have suggested Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Bud, Not Buddy, and The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane. I have already read the one about Edward Tulane. A lot of my friends are reading Diary of a Wimpy Kid, but I have not read it yet. And Bud, Not Buddy is supposed to be really good. Somebody said it won an award, even! I was also thinking of reading The Tiger Rising. It is by the same author who wrote the Edward Tulane book.

I hope more kids write back with more suggestions. I wan to decide this week. Tell you friends to write back with suggestions.

Time for me to go back to my library. Oh, I will take a picture of my library at home so you can see where I spend a lot of my time, when I'm not writing in my blog.

Bye for now, your friend,

Sleepy Bear's Book Club

Hi Boys and Girls!

Well, I have been giving a lot of thought about which book to choose for our first book club together. I have decided that I think it would be fun to read books that have won the Newberry Award. Do you know what that is? Well, if you don't, you're in luck because I will tell you.

"The John Newberry Award The Newberry Medal was designed in 1921. It is an award that is given every year for the most distinguished American Children's book published the year before. The American Library Association gave the responsibility for choosing the winner to the Children's Librarians Section. The Newberry Award became the first children's book award in the world."

I found this information at this website: http://library.thinkquest.org/J0113025/Newberry.html

I will look at the list of books that have won this award and then I will make suggestions. If you have a title you want to suggest, please be sure to write to me.

Happy reading,

Sleepy Bear

Summertime is over now and it's time for me to snuggle up indoors and cuddle up with some of my favorite friends - BOOKS! I loooove to read. And, I especially like to share what I read with my other friends - YOU! Sooo, I'm going to select a few books to read and then I will ask you for your suggestions on which one to read first. We can share our reading with each other. Just like a real grown-up book club. What do you think? If you have suggestions for books for our club, be sure to let me know.

OK, I'm off to my library. Check back soon for my list of titles to choose from.
