Sleepy Bear Reads a Halloween Story

Hi Book Buddies,

I’ve missed you! I was very busy this summer spending time with my family and I didn’t have my computer so I could blog to you. But, the good news is that I read all summer. And the second good news is that I’m back!

The book I chose to read and blog about is Nate the Great and the Halloween Hunt by Marjorie Weinman Sharmat. I am a big fan of Nate the Great.

Of course I also have my cup of hot cocoa and goo-gobs of whippy cream in my Halloween cup. Maybe you remember this cup from last year!

I can’t wait to start reading my new book. Look for this book at your bookstore or library then you can read along with me.

I hope to hear from you soon.

Sleepy Bear and Tales From the Odyssey

Hi Book Buddies,

I just finished reading Tales From the Odyssey by Mary Pope Osborne.

I learned a lot about Greek mythology. Do you know what mythology is? Well, if you don’t know, I’ll tell you! Mythology is the study of myths. Myths are legends, fables and folktales.

I’m glad I read this book in the sunny sunshine! It has some scary parts and I would have been very scaredy if I read them at night time.

Summer is almost over. Can you recommend an end-of-summer book for me to read?

Sleepy Bear Goes On An Odyssey

Hi Book Buddies,

I finished reading Book One from Tales From the Odyssey. The first book is called, The One-Eyed Giant. If that sounds scary to you, then you are not alone. I was scaredy the whole time I read the story! It is a good thing I was not reading at night time.

The story is about a character named Odysseus who goes to war to help save a Greek Queen named Helen of Troy. Helen was kidnapped. Odysseus did not want to go to war and leave his family behind, but he had no choice.

This story is also about Greek gods. They are mythical creatures with magical powers. Kathleen, my reading and writing teacher told me that I am very smart to learn about these characters now because then I will have a head start when I get to high school!

Back to the story. Odysseus asked Zeus, the god of the skies, and Poseidon, the god of the sea, to help him with a plan to rescue the Queen. His plan worked and finally Odysseus could go home.

But Odysseus had more dilemmas sailing home. He finally got super close but then his crew on his ship did something not very smart and their ship was blown all the way back to where it started.

Odysseus and his crew were captured by Polyphemus the son of Poseidon. Guess what? Polyphemus is a cyclopes! That is a monster with one eye. Well, Odysseus made Polyphemus mad and the other gods, too.

That is the end of the first book. Remember, this book has three books in one. I have two more to go. The next one is called, The Land of the Dead. That sounds scary again. I will wait until the sun is super bright today before I read.

I really like these stories. I am learning a lot and they are easy for me to read. Kathleen said they are very kid-friendly! I hope you write to me with questions about the Greek gods. You can quiz me on my comprehension skills!

Sleepy Bear Reads More Jazz Cats

Hi Book Buddies,

I never knew cats were so cool! The cats I live with are not as cool as the Jazz Cats. These cats don’t chase rats. They make music and their story rhymes!

Moosey-Moose went to New Orleans on one of his adventures. He went to some of places the Jazz Cats go to play their music.

Jazz Cats #2

Like Preservation Hall,

Jazz Cats #3

and Jackson Square,

Jazz Cats #4

and the French Quarter and Café Du Monde. That is the place where he ate the yummy doughnuts.

I like Jazz Cats. The story is very upbeat. I want to learn how to play the piano or the drums or maybe even the clarinet! I will ask Kathleen to make some beignets, those are the fancy French donuts at Café Du Monde.

Sleepy Bear and His New Plant

Hi Book Buddies,

Look what Moosey-Moose gave to me.

Moosey-Moose Gives Sleepy Bear a Cactus

Last weekend he went to a plant sale. He remembered that I used to have a plant. That plant died because I forgot to give it plenty of water and sunshine. I was really sad.

Now I’m happy again! Moosey-Moose said this plant is called a succulent. He also told me that is a fancy word for cactus! I should get a book that will tell me how to take care of my cactus plant. I want this one to live a long time. I will ask Kathleen to take me to the book store tomorrow.

Sleepy Bear Meets Stephanie Barden, Book Author!

Hi Book Buddies,

Today was a super special day for me. I got to meet my favorite book author, Stephanie Barden! Ms. Barden had a book party at Mockingbird Books in Green Lake and I got to have my picture taken with her!

Sleepy Bear Meets the Author! April 28, 2012

Do you remember when Ms. Barden gave me a copy of her book to read before it was for sale? It was called, Cinderella Smith, The More the Merrier. Well, the book is now for sale in bookstores!

Oh, and Ms. Barden gave me a shoe to wear around my neck because Cinderella Smith is always losing her shoes and now it is like I found one of her shoes. I chose a yellow one because Kathleen, my reading and writing teacher, has yellow shoes just like this one.

Now, go ask an adult really super nicely to take you to Mockingbird Books and buy a copy of Cinderella Smith, The More the Merrier. I know you will LOVE the story as much as I did. Oh, and you don’t have to be a girl to like the story. Even boys like me really like reading about Cinderella and Charles, too.

I’m going to go read my copy of Cinderella Smith, The More the Merrier, again!

Sleepy Bear Reads More Poetry

Hi Book Buddies,

Tonight I’m reading more poems from my poetry book called, What A Day It Was At School!, by Jack Prelutsky.

Reading With Tsavo

I chose to read with my Best Book Buddy, Tsavo. That means I can’t drink my hot cocoa with goo-gobs of whippy cream. Tsavo might want some and then she would get very sick.

One of my favorite poems is called “It’s Library Time” because I like going to the library. Kathleen went to the library today. She brought home a tall stack of books. It is almost as tall as me!

I hope you write to me and share some of your favorite poems, too.

Sleepy Bear Reads Poetry!

Hi Book Buddies,

Did you know that April is poetry month? That means for the entire month of April, I’m going to read poetry!

What A Day It Was At School!

The first book of poetry I chose to read is called, What A Day It Was At School!, by Jack Prelutsky.

There are a lot of funny poems in this book. One of my favorites is called, “I Wish I’d Studied Harrder”. It’s about a student who didn’t study for his spelling test. He got a lot of words wrong. There is one in the title of the poem that he misspelled. Do you know which word?

Check back later and I will share more of my favorite poems. I hope you write to me and share some of your favorite poems, too.

Sleepy Bear Finishes His Book!

Hi Book Buddies,

Whew! I finally finished reading, The Other Half of My Heart, by Sundee T. Frazier. It was a little bit challenging for me. Good thing I have my reading and writing teacher, Kathleen, to help me with tricky words. And some things in the story I didn’t understand. Like, bi-racial and prejudice.

The first word, bi-racial, means “two races” but not like the running kind. It’s the kind that means what you are. My race is brown bear. Moosey-Moose’s is brown moose. Kathleen said hers is a big mix!

The second word, prejudice, means when you believe something one way before you know the facts.

I’m glad for Minnie and Keira in the end. I hope you enjoyed this book as much as I did!

Now, what to read next?

Sleepy Bear Loves His Book!

Hi Book Buddies,

I have not written because I’ve been busy reading my book, The Other Half of My Heart.

Reading 1

I learned a new word. Escapade. I like the way it sounds. It means a daring adventure! I wrote the word on a posty note so I can remember to use it. Kathleen says that is a good way to add new words to my vocabulary! Kathleen is very smart.

That reminds me. Moosey-Moose is going on an escapade! He leaves today. He said it is someplace sunny. I have to guess where he’s going. Can you help me makes guesses?

But first, I’m going to read some more of my book.

The Wait Is Over!

Hi Book Buddies,

The long wait is over! Kathleen said it was not that long. But it felt like FOREVER! I always get impatient when I’m waiting for a new book.

The Wait Is Over!

I drank two cups of hot cocoa with goo-gobs of whippy cream waiting for my new book.

Sleepy Bear Introduces His New Book

The name of the book is The Other Half of My Heart. The author is my new friend, Sundee Frazier.

Autograph Page

Look! Ms. Frazier autographed my book! It says, “Sisters come in ALL colors!” Friends come in all colors, too.

This is the story of two twin sisters who are very different but very alike, too. They have bi-racial parents. I had to ask Kathleen what that means. She said in this story one parent is black and the other parent is white and so are the twin girls.

The sisters go to visit their grandmother in the South and it is very challenging for them. Kathleen told me that not all people like people who look different. I look very different from Moosey-Moose but he’s my best friend! Hey, friends come in all colors, too! I hope the two sisters in this book stay best friends.

I’m going to start reading my new book now. I hope you check back later.

I want to start reading it as soon as the postman delivers it. So I told Kathleen I would wait by the mailbox.

Kathleen made a tall cup of hot cocoa with goo-gobs of whippy cream for me to enjoy while I wait. And wait. And wait …

Hi Book Buddies,

I want to say a HUGE “thank you” to my buddies, Aiyah and Kent.

Aiyah, I had a super fun time visiting you in your classroom. I was a little scared at first, but you were very nice and Ms. Amundsen is really nice, too. I will tell Moosey-Moose you said “hi”, too.

I also want to say “hi” to my friend, Kent. Mrs. Hunter remembers you, too! We are both very happy for you and being successful in school. That’s a big word for me. I had to ask for help. I need a new book to read. Can you recommend one for me?

Thanks again for writing to me.

Sleepy Bear Learns How to Fly

Hi Book Buddies,

Look at me. I’m flying! My friend, Cassie, from the book, Tar Beach, taught me how!

Sleepy Bear Flies!

All you have to do is stretch out on a blanket and go someplace in your mind.

In the story, Cassie flies over the George Washington Bridge in New York City. She wears it like a necklace. The bridge is very special to her because her daddy helped build it.

I want to go someplace special, too. First, I asked Kathleen for a a blanket. Then I stretched out and closed my eyes and daydreamed about going to Paris.

I chose Paris because Kathleen and Moosey-Moose went there last year. They told me all about it!

Next, I’m going to dream about BOOKS! I want to see Moosey-Moose’s book on the shelves, too!

Sleepy Bear Celebrates African American History Month

Hi Book Buddies,

Did you  know that February is African American History month? My reading and writing teacher, Kathleen, told me it is a month to remember all the African Americans in history who struggled to have rights and privileges and helped our country.

I asked Kathleen if there are any books I can read that were written by African Americans. She said “absolutely!”

Day 1

One of her favorite books is Tar Beach by Faith Ringgold.

Tar Beach is about an 8 year old girl named Cassie who dreams about flying. Cassie says anyone can fly. “All you need is somewhere to go you can’t get to any other way.”  I’m going to read this book today and learn how to fly someplace I can’t get to any other way, too!

Check back later and I’ll tell you more about the story and about the author.

Sleepy Bear Reads The More the Merrier!

Hi Book Buddies,

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I finished reading Cinderella Smith, The More the Merrier.  I really really liked the story!

I liked it so much that I forgot to ask Kathleen to make another hot cocoa with goo-gobs of whippy cream for me!

If I were in third grade, I would want Cinderella to be in my classroom. She is smart and she is super nice. I also like the way she made up fun words. Like vexylent. I won’t give away what it means. But it is a nice word! Another word she made up is funderful! That is super fun to say! Funderful! Funderful! Funderful! I can’t wait to tell my buddy, Moosey-Moose!

Cinderella talked about the main theme in books, too. So I will tell you the main theme of this book. I think it is about including everyone in your club. Oh, and saying only nice words to people.

My friend, Stephanie Barden, she is the author of this book. She told me the book will be in the bookstores in April. That is not very far away. That’s vexylent!

I know you will like Cinderella Smith, The More the Merrier as much as I did. You can write to me on my blog and you can write to Stephanie Barden on her website. This is the link: http://www.stephaniebarden.com Let us know how much you like Cinderella and her new story!

Sleepy Bear Reads Another Cinderella Smith Book!

Hi Book Buddies,

My friend and author, Stephanie Barden gave me an advanced reading copy of her next book, Cinderella Smith, The More the Merrier.

Introduction to Book

The copy I have is called an advanced reading copy because it is not in the bookstores yet.

Stephanie’s editor and publisher are double-checking all the details so the grammar and punctuation are PERFECT!  Kathleen told me it is a good idea to re-read everything I write, too.

Today is another snowy day. My favorite weather to stay inside with my cup of hot cocoa with goo-gobs of whippy cream and read another Cinderella Smith book.

Check back and I will tell you what Cinderella is up to this time, but don’t worry, I won’t give any secrets away.

Sleepy Bear Finishes Reading His First Pinky and Peanut Book

Hi Book Buddies,

Freinds Again!

Have you ever blamed your best friend for something? And then you found out your friend didn’t do what you thought they did? I did that once with my friend, Moosey-Moose. I felt really bad. I was happy when Moosey-Moose said he forgave me.

Pinky and Peanut had a similar thing happen to them. Do you know what that means? It means that Peanut blamed Pinky for taking the journal out of the clubhouse. They had a big fight. But then they found out the truth. Peanut was happy that Pinky forgave her. I was happy for both of them.

Pinky and Peanut are now starting second grade as best friends! I hope you enjoyed reading The Adventure Begins. If you did, then you will probably like their next two books.

This is the link to Pinky and Peanut’s website: http://pinkyandpeanut.com Ask an adult to help you.

Check back soon. I’m going to start reading another new book! I know you will like this next one, too.

Sleepy Bear and Tsavo Read The Adventure Begins, a Pinky and Peanut Story

Hi Book Buddies,

I’m already on chapter 5 in my new book, The Adventure Begins. This is the first Pinky and Peanut book. So far there are three books.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I’m reading the part where Peanut shows Pinky the club house in her backyard! Peanut found it by accident. The first person she told was Pinky.

At the beginning of the story, both girls had to move to new neighborhoods. They didn’t know anyone! Pinky really missed her friends. Peanut missed her friends, too. But at least she has a brother. Lucky for Pinky and Peanut, they met each other because now they live across the street from each other! That is very lucky.

I wonder if Peanut’s brother is going to find out about the club house. If he does, he might want it for himself.

This is a fun book. I think Tsavo likes the story, too. This is the best day to stay inside and stay warm with my puppy, hot cocoa with goo-gobs of whippy cream, and cookies to nibble on.

Check back again and I will tell you what happens next.

Sleepy Bear Reads a Pinky and Peanut Book

Hi Book Buddies,

I chose my next book.

The Adventure Begins - Day 1

It is called, The Adventure Begins. This is a Pinky and Peanut chapter book. The authors are Deena Cook and Cherie McIntosh.

My reading and writing teacher, Kathleen, met the authors! I wish I had met them, too. Kathleen said they were really nice. She told them about me and they gave her a copy of their book. Kathleen gave it to me to read with my book buddies!

I’m going slurp my hot cocoa with goo-gobs of whippy cream and nibble on homemade cookies while I read about Pinky and Peanut.

This is the link to Pinky and Peanut’s website:  http://pinkyandpeanut.com.

There are lots of fun activities. Ask an adult to help you and ask in a super nice way if they will buy a copy of the book for you. Then we can read the book together.

Check back later and I will tell you more about Pinky and Peanut.

Sleepy Bear Finishes His Holiday Book

Hi Book Buddies,

I hope you had as much fun over the holidays as I did. In fact, I had so much fun, I didn’t have time to blog! But I did read.

The Tree Gets Shorter

Mr. Willowby’s Christmas tree is getting shorter and shorter.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I had a cookie that looked like a Christmas tree. It reminded me of Mr. Willowby’s tree. Every time I took a bite, it got shorter, too!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Finally, Mr. Willowby enjoys his tree and the mice inside their home enjoy their tree – just like Mr. Willowby’s. And, just like my cookie!

I hope you enjoyed reading Mr. Willowby’s Christmas Tree with me.

I’m choosing my first book to read for the year 2012. Check back soon to learn which book I’m going to read next.
