Sleepy Bear's Book Club - Book #3 - Day 11

Hi Book Buddies,

I just finished reading chapter 13. I feel really sorry for Skye and all the other Penderwick sisters and for Jeffrey, too. Mrs. Tipton said some really mean things about the girls. I probably would have done what Skye did, but maybe I would try not to yell at her.

I'm very curious about if Jeffrey will have to go away to school. I have a new prediction. I think Mrs. Tipton will finally listen to Jeffrey and she won't send him away. I hope so, anyway.

I have a new word - havoc on page 182.

It's snowing today. I'm going to stay inside and read chapter 14.

Sleepy Bear's Book Club - Book #3 - Day 10

Hi Book Buddies,

Whew! What a whirlwind I've been riding on with the Penderwick sisters. First Batty tries to walk all the way back home to Cameron and almost gets hit by a car! That was horrible. Then the garden party was a disaster. The Penderwick sisters sure do get into a lot of mischief. But, sounds like they are having fun. I bet Moosey-Moose would like to play with them.

I have a prediction. My prediction is that Jeffrey won't have to go to Pencey. I think he will talk to his mom or maybe one of the Penderwick sisters will talk to her for him.

I wrote down another word. It's forage on page 169.

Oh, I told Kathleen about Skye and how she doesn't like to revise her writing. Kathleen said all good writers have to revise. She thinks eventually Skye will rewrite, too.

I really like this book. I like the adventures I get to go on with all the characters. How about you?

Bye for now,

Sleepy Bear

Sleepy Bear's Book Club - Book #3 - Day 9

Hi Book Buddies,

I know it says Day 9 but I'm a little behind in my reading. So, I'm getting all caught up this morning. I hope that is OK with you.

Well, I just finished reading chapter 10. I was sitting on the edge of my seat the entire time I was reading! I was really worried about Yaz getting eaten by Hound. That would have been terrible. But then, I didn't really think the author would make Yaz die. That would have been too sad. But where is Batty?

I wrote down another word. Simultaneously on page 125. Also, I noticed the word pondered on page 127. Kathleen says ponder a lot. It means to think over. She likes to think about things before she decides what to do.

OK, I'm going to read chapter 11 now because I have to find out what happens to Batty. I hope she is OK.

Sleepy Bear's Book Club - Book #3 - Day 8

Hi Book Buddies,

I just finished chapter 9. Now I know what the shocking news was. Poor Jeffrey! What a horrible way to find out his mother is going to get married to Dexter. I agree with the Penderwick sisters that Dexter is not very nice. I'm glad Kathleen is not going to ship me off to school someplace far far away.

What does it mean when the girls, "could almost hear Mrs. Tifton preening like a peacock" on page 117? The root word is preen so I'm going to look that up in the dictionary and then add it to Moosey-Moose's refrigerator words.

Do you have new words, too?

Check back again for my next chapter review.

Sleepy Bear's Book Club - Book #3 - Day 7

Hi Book Buddies,

Wow! I did a lot of reading while I was in Victoria. I just finished chapter 8. Have you ever had to eat dinner at a really fancy restaurant with a bunch of grown ups? I have. I felt like Jeffrey and all the Penderwick sisters at Jeffrey's birthday party dinner.

Did you notice how Dexter got the name of the church wrong on page 107? He called it the Sistern Chapel instead of the Sistine Chapel. I remember reading about the Sistine Chapel in The Tiger Rising. Boy, Dexter needs our help!

I'm going to read chapter 9 tonight. Chapter 9 is called "Shocking News." I wonder what is going to happen next.

I'll let you know tomorrow so I hope you are keeping up with our reading.

Bye for now,

Sleepy Bear Returns Home from Victoria, Canada

Hi Boys and Girls,

Moosey-Moose and I came home last night. I had a wonderful time in Victoria. Everyone at The Fairmont Empress Hotel was really nice to me. Dillon even shook my hand when we had to leave. I hope I get to go back to Victoria real soon.

Have you ever been to Victoria?

Sleepy Bear Reads About High Tea at The Empress Hotel

Hi Boys and Girls,

Yesterday, when I had High Tea at The Empress Hotel, I read about the history of high tea. Hundreds of years ago in England a duchess got weary everyday at about 5 o'clock in the evening. So, she started to have a mid-afternoon snack of tea and sandwiches so she wouldn't feel weary later in the day. She invited her friends to join her and then it became a daily tradition. The tradition still happens today! That's really interesting. I'm going to have high tea when I get home, too.

Sleepy Bear's Book Club - Book #3 - Day 6

Hi Book Buddies,

Let's read chapter 8 today.

One of the reasons why I like The Penderwicks is because each of the characters is really different. I think I am mostly like Batty because I'm shy and quiet like she is. Who do you think you are mostly like?

Sleepy Bear's Book Club - Book #3 - Day 5

Hi Book Buddies,

I read this morning in the private dining room at The Empress Hotel. It's cozy here with comfy chairs. Just my kind of place.

I hope you read Chapter 7. I like the part about Churchies' kitchen. I imagined in my mind a kitchen like that for Kathleen because she likes to bake.

I also like how the author lets the reader know about the different characters by the clothes they choose for Jeffrey's party. I bet it's fun to have an attic to play in. But maybe a little scary, too. I would probably get lost.

I'm going to read Chapter 8 tonight.

Sleepy Bear Enjoys High Tea at The Empress Hotel

Hi Boys and Girls,

I'm having a great time in Victoria. I'm here with Kathleen and her husband and Moosey-Moose. Today we had "high tea" at the Empress Hotel. We ate yummy sandwiches without the crust. Some had salmon and some had mushrooms and some had cucumbers. Then we had scones with cream and jam. Then, for dessert, we ate little cakes and chocolates. And of course tea. I felt very grown up. It's very fancy here. I have to keep reminding Moosey-Moose about his manners, like keeping his napkin in his lap to catch the crumbs. And he makes a lot of crumbs! Don't tell him I said so.

Sleepy Bear's Book Club - Book #3 - Day 4

Hi Book Buddies,

Guess what? I'm in Victoria, Canada right now. I'm staying at The Fairmont Empress hotel. I got to ride on a boat called The Clipper. It was lots of fun. I did a lot of reading yesterday. And this morning I woke up and read in bed with a cup of cocoa.
I really like The Penderwicks. Now Batty's name makes sense to me and I don't think it's so funny anymore but a very special name. I am very curious about Jeffrey. I think maybe he is lonely, but he is also very smart. What do you think?
There are a lot of new words, too! Moosey-Moose will go crazy with post-it notes! Here are a few of the words I put on my post-it notes:
flora on page 12
urn on page 24
alabaster on page 74
I will write again in a couple of hours! I can't wait to read your comments, too.

Sleepy Bear's Book Club - Book #3 - Day 3

Hi Book Buddies,

I really like our new book, The Penderwicks. I think the girls have funny names. I've never heard of a girl named Skye or Batty. I wonder how the author thought of those names.

What is your favorite part so far? Write soon.

Sleepy Bear's Book Club - Book #3 - Day 2

Hi Book Buddies,

This is a picture of me in bed reading my book. I like to read in bed just before I go to sleep because then I can make pictures in my mind about the characters when I'm sleeping. And we all know how much I like to sleep! Tell me about your favorite reading place.

Let's get started with our new book. I think we can read the first six chapters this week. I know that sounds like a lot but if you divide that between 6 days, that's only 1 chapter each day. That doesn't sound like a lot anymore.

I hope you enjoy the book. Write to me soon.

Your Book Buddy,

Sleepy Bear

Sleepy Bear's Book Club - Book #3 - Day 1

Good morning Book Buddies,

Gagandeep, the book you checked-out from the library sounds like a super-duper book! I want to learn more about presidents, too. Can you tell me the name of the book?

I have decided on a new book. Let's go ahead and read The Penderwicks, by Jeanne Birdsall. It won the National Book Award. The story is about four sisters who go to an estate for the summer. While they are there they meet Jeffrey who is the son of the owner of the estate. His mother tells all of them to stay out of trouble. But do they? I can't wait to start reading and find out what kinds of adventures the four sisters and Jeffrey get into!

I'll write back later to let you know how many pages to read this week. I'm very excited to start a new book! Thanks for being my book buddies, too.

Sleepy Bear's Book Club - Book #2 - Day 6

Hi Book Buddies!

Thank you to everyone who wrote to me about Diary of a Wimpy Kid. Yes, we finished reading that book. Now we need to decide on a new book. I like every one's suggestions. But, I really, really, really want to choose a book that no one has read yet. Has anyone heard of The Penderwicks?

Well, I'm going to go look at more books on the book shelves and maybe I'll get more ideas, too. Let me know if you find a book that you have not read, yet.

Sleepy Bear's Book Club - Book #2 - Day 5

Hi Book Buddies!

Whew! Diary of a Wimpy Kid was very funny!

Gagandeep, I think Greg likes his family but sometimes Manny bothers him a lot. I think that is like Moosey-Moose who bothers me sometimes. He likes to play jokes, too. But I still like Moosey-Moose because he is my best friend.

Some of you want to read the second book and some of you are already reading book number three. That is really great. I'm glad everyone is reading. But I think I will choose a different book for my next book club book. I have one idea, The Penderwicks. Do you have any other ideas?

Thanks to everyone who writes to me. I really like getting blog messages. I hope you have a great day!

Your Book Buddy,

Sleepy Bear
