Sleepy Bear and the THREE LITTLE KITTENS

Hi Book Buddies,

I finished reading THREE LITTLE KITTENS by Jerry Pinkney.

Sleepy Bear and the Messy Kittens

My favorite part is when the kittens get their mittens messy with pie!

Another favorite part is the WHOLE BOOK because I like how the words rhyme. I read it out loud to Tsavo. She perked her ears up and was a very good listener.

I wonder what it would be like if I put mittens on Kathleen’s cats?

While I read this book I had a text to life connection. Kathleen likes to crochet and one time her cats got the balls of yarn and made a really big mess! Kathleen was not too happy about all the knots in her yarn.

Well, Book Buddies, time for me to choose a new book. Do you have a recommendation? I can’t wait for Moosey-Moose to finish writing his book so I can read it.

Sleepy Bear Has a New Book!

Hi Book Buddies,

My book buddies in Mrs. A’s classroom recommended another book for me to read. It is called, THREE LITTLE KITTENS. The author is Jerry Pinkney! He was the illustrator for the last book I read. Now he is both the author and the illustrator. Kathleen says Mr. Pinkney is very talented.

Sleepy Bear and Tsavo Introduce the Book

Tsavo was sitting in the sun and I wanted to join her, so I did! I left my hot cocoa inside. Chocolate is not good for Tsavo to eat. She will get very sick.

Tsavo and I live with three cats. That is almost the same as kittens. Maybe I can read this book to them, too! I will ask Kathleen to help me. I have to be very careful when I am around the cats. They like to lick the goo-gobs of whippy cream off my hot cocoa. And, they have claws that scratch me when I try to shoo them away. Tsavo doesn’t do that. Whew!

Check back later and I will share what Tsavo and I have read.

Sleepy Bear Answers His Mail

Hi Book Buddies,

My book buddies in Mrs. A.’s class wrote to me with a list of tricky words from THE TALKING EGGS.

scold
spirit of do right
word of honor
backwoods
bramble bushes
gawked
corkscrew
plaited
hightailed
chased
modern
generous

This is a super long list. I know what scold means. That’s what happens when you do something you shouldn’t do and an adult gets mad at you. But not in a super mean way. Just enough so you know not to do it again. Psst… Moosey-Moose gets scolded a LOT! But don’t tell him I told you.

I hope you can help me with the other words on the list.

Oh, I want to say “Hello” and Thank You” to my friend Kylie. She wrote a super nice letter to me. Kylie, I think I used to have a monster under my bed, but Junie B. helped me solve that problem!

Sleepy Bear’s Predicament Is Solved!

Hi Book Buddies,

My reading and writing teacher, Kathleen, got a copy of THE TALKING EGGS from the library!

Sleepy Bear Reads THE TALKING EGGS

I sat on the couch with my hot cocoa with EXTRA goo- goobs of whippy cream and I read the whole book!

My book buddies sure know how to choose a good book!

Rose and her mother are very mean. I’m lucky. I live with all nice people like Blanche in the book.

I felt sorry for Blanche. She had to do all the hard work. But she has a big heart because she never laughed at people and animals who were less fortunate than her. That’s my new word for the day – fortunate.  Can you tell me what that means?

There were a lot of tricky words in this book. Like brayed and contrary. Maybe my book buddies can help me.

Now I’m sorry I read THE TALKING EGGS so fast because I have to find another book to read! If you have a recommendation, let me know.

Sleepy Bear Has a Predicament

Hi Book Buddies,

I have a predicament. I learned that word from Moosey-Moose. It is a fancy way of saying I have a problem.

My problem is that I can’t get a copy of The Talking Eggs.

Sleepy Bear Reads to Book Buddies - #2

I ‘m supposed to read it because my book buddies in Mrs. A’s class recommended it to me when I visited them last week.

What am I going to do? If you know where I can get a copy, will you let me know?

Thank you,

Sleepy Bear

Sleepy Bear’s Book Buddies Recommend a New Book!

Hi Book Buddies,

Today was a super special day for me.  I got to visit my book buddies in Mrs. A’s classroom!  They were very nice to me and I learned a lot from them.

One reading strategy they taught me was how to learn tricky words.  They told me to use the pictures to help me.  I like that idea!  Another strategy they taught me was to be sure to sound out the tricky words.  Sometimes I get lazy and I skip the tricky words.  That  is not a good idea.

I was really hoping my book buddies would give me a recommendation for a new book or an author to read for the month of May.  Guess what?

Sleepy Bear's New Book

They gave me the most perfect recommendation!

The book is called The Talking Eggs by Robert D. San Souci and illustrated by Jerry Pinkney.

In 1989 this book won the Caldecott Honor Award.  That means the pictures are really really good!

I’m very excited to start reading my new book.  I hope my book buddies write to me and share their thinking while reading this book with their teacher, Mrs. A.

Check back tomorrow when I share my thinking with you, too.

Sleepy Bear Visits His Book Buddies

Hi Book Buddies,

I woke up early to look at my calendar for this week. I have something fun planned on Thursday.

Sleepy Bear Checks His Calendar

My reading and writing teacher, Kathleen, is taking me to Mrs. A’s classroom!  I’m super excited to meet my book buddies.

Mrs. A’s students like to read a LOT! Maybe they will have a recommendation for me.  It would be super fun to read a bunch of books from one author. I can’t wait until Thursday.

Time for me to make a cup of hot cocoa with goo-gobs of whippy cream. I think I will re-read one of my favorite books.  Kathleen told me that it is okay to read books more than one time.  She said I might have missed some details the first time and it’s fun to spend time with my favorite book character friends again.
