Sleepy Bear Reads a Back-to-School Book!

Hi Book Buddies,

Welcome back to school! I hope you had a fun summer.

Today I am reading a picture book about a teacher who thinks she is all ready for school! My reading and writing teacher, Kathleen, read this book to her students when she taught in a classroom. Her students really liked the story and all the funny things that happen to the teacher.

Cover Page

The book is called, THIS IS THE TEACHER, by Rhonda Gowler Greene and illustrated by Mike Lester.

“This is the teacher all ready for school.”

I have a prediction. I think the teacher is not going to be ready for school. But I wonder why. Do you know?

Uh Oh! The students were very impatient. That means they did not wait quietly before they entered the classroom.

Everything in the classroom went crashing to the floor! I don’t think the teacher was ready for that.

I hope you read along with me. Check back tomorrow and I’ll tell you more about the story and what happens to the teacher.

Have a great day!

Sleepy Bear Answers His Mail

Hi Book Buddies,

Have you read Moosey-Moose’s chapter yet? I hope you tell him how much you like it! Maybe he will post chapter 2.

Time for me to answer my mail. First, Aiyah, thank you for the help about the bird feeders. I think I put too much bird seed in the bird feeders, too. I hope Moosey-Moose will help me next time.

Kylie, you asked a very good question about my message in code. I will give you some hints to help you. First, how do I start my letters to my book buddies? After you answer that question, match letters to the symbols. Do that much then write to me again and I will give you another clue. Thank you for trying to decode my message!

Sasha wrote to me about wanting a bookmark. The bookmarks are free. But, first ask an adult to write or call my reading and writing teacher, Kathleen, with your address. Her address and phone number are on her web page.

I hope everyone is having a good summer.

Sleepy Bear Reads a New Book

Hi Book Buddies,

I am very excited because I get to read a new book! But this is not just any book. This book is the one my best friend wrote. It is called, Moosey-Moose Goes On An Adventure. That’s right. Moosey-Moose wrote a book! Well, he had a little bit of help from our reading and writing teacher, Kathleen.

Chapter 1

I am going to spend my afternoon in my favorite reading chair, nibbling on scones that Kathleen made and a cup of hot cocoa with goo-gobs of whippy cream.

You can read the first chapter with me. Just go to Moosey-Moose’s blog. I am going to write a comment on his blog to tell him my predictions for chapter 2. You can write to him and tell him your predictions. I know he will write back.

Sleepy Bear Writes a Message In Code

Hi Book Buddies,

Remember I said I might try to write to you in code, well, here’s my message:

Dear Book Buddies,

I’m back from sunny San Diego and really missing the sun. To help cheer me up, I’ve been reading my book about codes and decoding. It’s super fun! But now I need a new book. Do you have a book recommendation for me?

Your Book Buddy,

Sleepy Bear

If you are the first one to decode my message, I will send you one of my bookmarks and I will mention your first name on my blog! But first you will need permission from an  adult. Good luck!

Your Book Buddy,

Sleepy Bear

Sleepy Bear Learns About Early Writing!

Hi Book Buddies,

I’m sitting by the pool at Francesca’s house in San Diego. Francesca is Kathleen’s friend.

I’m reading a book called CODE BREAKERS. So far I have learned about codes and ciphers. Codes replace words or numbers for something else. A cipher is the part that unscrambles the code. I had to read this part a few times. It’s very tricky to understand. There are lots of new vocabulary words. But I’m getting it!

Today I’m reading about the different kinds of early writing.

For example, pictographs used pictures of objects to tell a message. Cuneiform is a type of writing that used pictographs.

Hieroglyphs used symbols for a sound or a syllable or an object.

My brain is full! I’m going to take a break and surprise Moosey-Moose with some gelato! But I’ll be back. I hope you like learning about early writing and codes as much as I do.

Maybe I’ll write a message in code and you can decipher it! That sounds like fun.

Sleepy Bear Reads A New Book–In San Diego!

Hi Book Buddies,

I got tired of doing all of Moosey-Moose’s chores so he could write his book. Then he left Seattle to go on vacation in sunny San Diego with my reading and writing teacher, Kathleen. I didn’t like that one bit. So, guess what I did?

I snuck on the plane with Kathleen and now guess what I’m doing?

So Many Books, So Little Time

I’m in San Diego at her friend’s house! First I went to a bookstore and I bought a bunch of new books. I bought 6 non-fiction books!

Now I have to choose which one to read first while I sit by the beach.

Chooses The Code Breakers

I think I’ll read this one first. It’s called CODE BREAKERS. It is about different kinds of codes, like Morse code and hieroglyphics. I’ll tell you more after I read the book.

Reading The Code Breakers

This is one of my best reading days!

Oh, I forgot to tell you, Moosey-Moose doesn’t know that I’m here, too. I think he might get mad.

Sleepy Bear Feeds the Birds

Hi Book Buddies,

Moosey-Moose said he had to finish making changes to his manuscript because he is on a deadline. So guess who is feeding the birds?

Feeding the Birds - July 2011

Yup! Me! I have never fed the birds before. I wonder how much bird seed to put inside the feeder.

What if I feed them too much? Will they get sick?

Feeding the Birds #2 - July 2011

That looks like a LOT of bird seed! And I’m up really high!

I want Moosey-Moose and Kathleen to finish their book soon. I don’t like feeding the birds.

Sleepy Bear
